Veteran Transition: Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing? A New Online Course Now Open for Enrolment
There's a powerful image on the cover of Barry Zworestine's book Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing? — a figure standing above the clouds, bathed in the warm light of a rising sun. Beneath them, their reflection: a soldier in full kit, weapon shouldered, still facing the past. Above, the same person stands quietly in civilian clothes, looking forward into open sky.
It's a single image that captures what so many veterans and their families struggle to put into words: two versions of yourself, occupying the same body, often facing in opposite directions.
Today, we're proud to announce that the wisdom of that book is now available as a free, self-paced online course — and enrolments are open.
A Course Born from Lived Experience
Veteran Transition: Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing? is a transformational online programme delivered by the Pro Patria Centre. It is grounded in the work of Barry Zworestine, a psychologist and Rhodesian Bush War Veteran whose decades of experience supporting Australia's serving community have shaped a uniquely honest, deeply practical approach to transition.
This isn't a corporate "career pivot" workshop. It isn't a checklist of resume tips. It is, as Barry himself describes in the book, an operational manual — a structured journey for those who have served, and those who continue to serve, to make sense of where they've been, who they are now, and where they're choosing to face next.
Why Now?
Transition out of uniform is one of the most significant shifts a person will ever experience. The skills, identity, brotherhood and sisterhood that defined your service don't simply switch off. Yet civilian life rarely recognises the depth of what you carry.
Many veterans describe feeling like they're standing in two worlds at once: half of them still scanning the horizon for threats, the other half trying to attend a parents' BBQ without flinching at a slammed door. That tension has a name. It has a shape. And — most importantly — it has a way through.
This course offers that pathway.
What's Inside the Course
Across eight self-paced lessons, participants are guided through:
✅ Acknowledging the warrior you've been — honouring the service, the sacrifices, and the identity forged in uniform
✅ Recognising the warrior you are now — confronting honestly where you stand today, without judgement
✅ Shaping the warrior you're becoming — making conscious choices about the direction you want your life to face
he lessons are delivered through video sessions and reflective exercises you can work through in your own time, on your own terms. There's no rigid schedule, no group calls you have to dial into, no pressure. Just the work — done at your own pace, in your own space.
Who It's For
This course has been built for:
✅ Serving members preparing to transition from the ADF
✅ Recently discharged veterans feeling unmoored or uncertain
✅ Long-transitioned veterans who sense something is still unresolved
✅ Partners and family members walking alongside someone in transition
✅ Anyone who has worn the uniform and is asking, "What now?"
If any part of that list lands with you — this course was designed with you in mind.
The Best Part: It's Completely Free
Thanks to the generous funding of the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network, Veteran Transition: Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing? is offered at no charge to participants. The only investment required is your time across eight lessons.
That's a deliberate choice. Cost should never be the reason a veteran doesn't get the support they deserve. The Murrumbidgee PHN's backing means we can offer this work to the community it was built for, without barriers.
Enrol Today
The next chapter doesn't begin when you discharge, or when you hand in the uniform for the last time. It begins the moment you decide which way you're going to face.
If you're ready — or even just curious — we'd be honoured to walk alongside you.
